EMBERFALL
A Dragon Knight's Chronicle
Some are born to serve kings. Kael was born to answer fire.
The Calling
In the village of Ashdown, at the foot of the Cinderpeaks, the elders spoke of dragons the way others speak of gods — with fear, and with hope.
Kael was the only child who still watched the ridgeline after dark.
On the night the sky first burned gold above the peaks, something in him answered.
The Trial
The path to the Cinderpeaks was no path at all — only the Ashbridge, a spine of broken rock over a mile of open air.
A hundred pilgrims had turned back before the third crossing. Kael did not look down.
He crossed at dusk, and the mountain let him live.
The Dragon
At the summit waited Ashkalon — a dragon older than the kingdom's oldest stone, and just as wary of men.
She tested him the only way dragons know how: with fire enough to unmake a man.
Kael did neither. He simply stood — and the fire chose to spare him.
The Oath
Ashkalon had not found an equal in a thousand years. That night, she offered Kael what no dragon had offered a human: her flame, bound to his blade.
The old rite had a name older than the mountain — the Oath of Ember.
The blade drank the flame, and Kael rose a Dragon Knight.
The Battle
Word of a fire-blooded knight reached Warlord Ossian before the season turned. He marched on Ashdown to claim that power for himself.
Kael met him at the Ashbridge — the same stones that once tested a boy now held the line for a knight.
Steel met flame, and flame won.
The Choice
Ossian's army broke. His life was Kael's to take — one stroke, and the threat to Ashdown ended forever.
Ashkalon watched from the ridge, waiting to see what her knight had truly become.
Kael lowered his blade. Mercy, he decided, was the rarer fire.
The Legacy
Ashdown never forgot the winter a boy walked into the mountains and came back a legend.
Kael still climbs the Ashbridge every year, and Ashkalon still meets him at the top — not as a test now, but as a promise kept.
This is the chronicle of Kael Emberbound — the first Dragon Knight, and the last who ever needed proving.
The End — For Now
Every Dragon Knight's chronicle is only the chapter someone remembered to tell. Kael's is still being written on the ridgeline above Ashdown.
